#OITworks: OIT is a “social and emotional cure” as a food allergy treatment
Oral immunotherapy desensitizes children & adults to their food allergens. By consuming the allergen regularly, in increasing amounts under the care of a board-certified allergist, patients' immune systems adapt to the allergen that formerly would have caused a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Desensitized patients are still allergic. They consume their allergen regularly to maintain desensitization.
We say it's a "social cure" because it eliminates social exclusion due to food allergies, and the many social confrontations that come from questioning every bite of food.
We say it's an "emotional cure" because it eliminates fear of food, and of feeling different or left out from peers.

Real Families, Real Stories, Real Success
We are a family of four and live in central Oklahoma, an area known for high allergens. With no known family history of food allergy, I never expected my baby would be “that kid”; and have a severe peanut allergy. When my son, Callen, (at 16 mo) vomited after his first real Halloween candy, a Reese’s Cup, I had a slight feeling it could be food allergy. He had chronic eczema and blood tests did reveal a peanut allergy but I knew the tests weren’t black and white and didn’t absolutely mean a true food allergy was present. After all, he could eat eggs just fine and those were on his panel too. So, one day I gave him 2 mini Ritz crackers with peanut butter. He got lethargic and vomited. Just like that Halloween night. It was confirmed. My husband’s grandma has since shared that she has some reactions to peanut but not anaphylaxis.
He’s 4 now and since that initial discovery, he’s had 3 accidental exposures. One was a batch of locally made lactation cookies that didn’t list all ingredients. One was a drum stick given to him by a family member the day my aunt passed away. The family had gathered and I was intent on hearing my cousin’s words about my aunt’s final moments. I let my … Read more

My son Tyler is 16 and started OIT in June. I will admit that I was so nervous about this whole program even though I had been reading about it for a couple of years since the beginning stages when this sort of program was done only in a hospital setting. My son actually pushed me to make the call and set up an appointment for the consultation. He is older now and I felt that I was no longer going to have the control that I have had over the years regarding his safety. As Tyler began his teen years I started feeling my anxiety levels heighten again. The thoughts of him growing and maturing and discovering his own path in life, making choices, decisions, and mistakes for himself without us ensuring his safety ahead of time were overwhelming.. After 16 years you kind of get use to the routine which has become our way of life. These thoughts brought me back to that initial feeling of fear when we found out that he had a peanut allergy at 8 months old, amongst other food allergies at the time. I remember going into Trader Joe’s market and just breaking down into tears because he was so limited, and all I thought at the time was “What am I going to feed my son, he is just a baby!” Peanu… Read more

I am here to offer you HOPE.
In a moment that is forever seared in our minds, our 22 month-old-daughter took a small bite of cookie and immediately went into anaphylaxis. That small bite brought on confusion, fear, 911, and a hospital stay filled with needles, drugs and heart machines. In an instant, we saw how quickly the precious life we had created could be taken away from us. It was unthinkable. That moment would forever change our lives. Our world was turned upside down as we started to process the fact that food could be deadly to our child. Nuts became our enemy, and our anxiety rose as we tirelessly tried to protect her from food proteins smaller than the eye could see. We were fighting an invisible enemy 24/7. This new realization affected every aspect of our lives and followed us like a dark cloud.
As a food allergy mom, I was kidding myself into believing that if I took all the precautions, if I left nothing to chance, if I controlled every environment she was in, then I could single handedly keep our daughter safe. This line of thinking is why all of us “allergy moms” look and act crazy to the rest of the world. I literally felt as if my child’s life was in … Read more

My daughter was diagnosed just before she turned 2 years old with a severe life threatening peanut allergy. To learn that your child could die at any moment from even trace amounts of peanut, changes your word completely. I began to immediately research what a peanut allergy meant for my child and how to keep her safe. She grew up knowing she could NOT eat many foods that we all ate, and she became fearful of food, peanuts, and reactions. She was upset at parties, she wanted to be like everyone else. She went to special peanut free preschool and private kindergarten to keep her safe.
We were initially told there was no treatment and to just strictly avoid peanuts and food that could contain traces of peanuts. It was very scary for me as her mother to imagine her as an older child, or teenager. When she is little I can control a lot of where she goes, what she eats, etc. But as she gets older I have to let her take over and I know a lot of accidental deaths form allergies happen in the teen and young adult years. That scared me to death.
I learned of OIT from a friend, and I began researching. I still wasn’t sure if it was the right path for my child. I was so full of fear and anxie… Read more

Tuck began peanut OIT with Dr. Scott Nash (retired) in Raleigh, NC at 2 years old. I found hope in this treatment and by starting Tuck this young, hoped he would never feel the anxiety that I knew would await him if we did nothing. It was not an easy journey, not due to reactions during treatment, but due to a strong willed toddler who didn’t ever really seem to want to eat his daily dose. However, we took it one day at a time and here we are eating 5 grams of peanuts daily and have been for over 17 months.
We are currently under the care of Dr. Ruchir Agrawal in Peachtree City, GA and to say that this man cares for my kid is an understatement. He took us in immediately when Dr. Nash retired and has been caring for Tuck ever since. Throughout our 32 month journey, most of my support has come from my Facebook family. From first hearing about OIT on the Peanut Anaphylaxis Cure Facebook page, to being around for the creation of Private Practice OIT Facebook page (which was created just for those actively in OIT), to my local gals creating NC OIT…these groups have been my support.
We have laughed together, cried together, been scared together, but key word is TOGETHER. It was s… Read more

My son, Logan was diagnosed with a peanut allergy when he was less than 2 years old. We managed for the most part ok but around age 8 he became more or more nervous. One week he came home from church with an activity they did about worry—-and his top worry was: dying. This hit us hard. The more we talked about it the more it became clear that he truly was worried about this….all the time.
We considered ourselves pretty calm allergy parents. We by no means were trying to scare him. I started researching doctors doing food challenges….I didn’t know if we’d qualify but felt I had to look into some sort of treatments. At least a second opinion.
That is when we found Dr. Moss and first learned a little about OIT. I found the Facebook groups, Private Practice OIT and OIT 101, and started researching in earnest. I have a doctorate in a medical field. I reached out to friends and colleagues. I read the literature. I asked questions. We all decided to have a consult. At the consult Dr. Moss recommended we challenge almonds…..and we did and passed. Frankly this alone was huge to us.
Then we decided based on testing to start OIT. Logan was excited. I was excited and scared. We have had a ve… Read more

If you would’ve told me nine months ago that my severely peanut allergic kindergartner who had reactions to peanut dust on someone else’s hands is now eating 8 peanuts a day I would have thought you were insane! I mean I would’ve been excited but incredibly skeptical. But here we are and exactly 5 months from his day one we graduated peanut OIT with Dr. Mayer in West Bloomfield, MI. Not only do we get to enjoy Dairy Queen, Dunkin’ Donuts and Five Guys whenever we want but also OIT has changed the lives of every one of our many family members. The same kid had his first ever sleep over this week. Something never possible before. I never knew about OIT until his first day of school when a fellow food other Chick-fil-A mentioned it to me. We immediately scheduled a consultation and got on the short waiting list.
I have to say now that the stress and worry for starting was so much worse than it was in real life. He had a very easy time in OIT despite having very chaotic schedules, activities, full-time working parents AND blood tests well over 100. Yet here we are. Maintenance has been relatively easy adaptation to our life and any schedule changes we have to make a well worth it to ha… Read more

I didn’t think it would be too hard to manage my younger son’s multiple food allergies. He would be safe if he only ate food that I provided and made for him, and I would be able to protect him from exposure or cross contamination if we avoided places or situations that may have his food allergens. However, as he grew older and more independent, I realized that it was harder than I thought. As kindergarten drew closer, I became more and more anxious – how could I protect him when he was at school, with kids eating peanut butter sandwiches, granola bars, and anything else that contained nuts? How could I trust others to look after him, and know the appropriate action to take if he had an anaphylactic reaction? We also found out my older son had developed a peanut allergy at that time. Our stress levels were through the roof!
Somehow, we were lucky enough to find Dr. Agrawal at Freedom Allergy when we moved to Atlanta, and he told us about OIT. It took us some time to decide to do it, but we are so grateful now! Oral Immunotherapy has changed our lives. Not only has it given my sons protection from their food allergies to peanut and tree nuts, but it has given our entire family freed… Read more

Andrew was diagnosed with an anaphylactic peanut allergy around the age of 2. He was airborne and contact sensitive, and every RAST test he had came back “over 100” for peanuts. For 13 years, we took no risks and practiced strict avoidance of any and all peanuts.
In 2013, we saw a news story about oral immunotherapy (OIT) and the success it was showing in studies and by the few allergists that were offering it in private practice. We began searching for an OIT allergist and quickly found Dr. Love at the Allergy Clinic of Tulsa, approximately 2 hours away from our Southwest Missouri home. Dr. Love was very honest with us during our initial consultation and explained the risks as well as the hopes of OIT. At the time, Dr. Love was fairly new to offering OIT and had never treated a peanut allergy patient whose RAST scores were off the charts like Andrew’s. However, Dr. Love was willing to try if Andrew was too. For the first time in 13 years, we took a risk. A BIG risk. And it paid off.
We started OIT in May 2013, which happened to be the busiest summer for Andrew, who was a 15 year old, three-sport high school athlete. His summer was already full of baseball practices and games, foo… Read more

We used to eat “may contain” products for several years, then I joined several Facebook food allergy groups and realized that I was in the minority.
When we started OIT, my two peanut allergy kids had never had an anaphylactic reaction by ingestion (my son would get itchy eyes from airborne particles at baseball stadiums) so I assumed that they were already highly desensitized. However, they both reacted to .02 mg (a peanut has approximately 250 mg) of peanut protein that first day.
That day was a wake up call for me and my laid back husband. We realized how sensitive they were and how lucky we were that they had never had a reaction by us ignoring labels. My kids are now safe and will not be “statistics” by accidentally ingesting peanut. Read more
