Launched the first breast imaging center in Pune (population over 4 million)

At the time my colleague, an internist from Pune, lost his wife due to breast cancer, Pune had neither breast imaging facilities nor the awareness about the importance of screening mammograms. Subsequently, my colleague and I launched the first breast imaging center in Pune. My role involved helping install the equipment, training the technicians, monitoring quality, reading mammograms, educating patients about self breast examinations and also helping to deliver mammograms at a reduced cost to deserving patients. Before leaving Pune, India in 1995, I trained another radiologist in breast imaging to continue the work I had initiated.

Honors and Awards

AMA Foundation Leadership Award (2000)
This award is to recognize one’s contribution as a leader to the medical field and the community. 25 residents/fellows were selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by American Medical Association to receive this award. My CV, an essay on the statement of interest and a letter of recommendation from the program director served as the basis. As an award recipient, I had the opportunity to attend the 2000 AMA National Leadership Development Conference in March 2000. This conference was aimed at further advancing leadership skills within organized medicine and the community.

Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellow Award (2000)
This award is based on the qualities associated with the founders, Drs. William and Charles W. Mayo, including, outstanding – clinical performance, humanitarianism, and scholarly activity. Only two residents/fellows were selected from an outstanding pool of over 300 residents/fellows in Internal Medicine and Medical Subspecialties at the Mayo Clinic.

Better World Award – Gabriel Richard Institute (1998)
Gabriel Richard Institute is a nonprofit organization founded by missionaries in the post world war II era with the mission of developing leaders in the community. It offers workshops around the country. I received this award at the Leadership Development workshop organized by Gabriel Richard Institute in Chicago. This was a peer-nominated award given to me by 25 other participants of the workshop. In the workshop we shared stories from our own life, wherein we had in someway contributed to the community sometimes struggling against all the odds.
Some of my most appreciated contributions as a medical student were
responding to a call for blood donation at midnight by a total stranger,
dissuading a close friend from suicide,
helping establish free drug access for poor people,
publishing a study kit for medical students while I was myself a senior medical student in the medical school.

German (1992), Austrian (1995) and Swiss (1996) Government scholarships for advanced training and research
I was the only practicing Indian physician to have received these three scholarship awards from the three different European organizations for advanced training and research. The selection for each of them was based on CV, proposal for advanced training and research and proficiency in the German language.
