BLOG: Ethan’s Peanut Allergy Journey; by Ethan’s parents

imageThere are over 50 OIT family blogs published in our Research & Learn library. They contain the journey of that family in OIT–some are in clinical trials, and others are in private practice with board-certified allergists. All the blogs are fascinating to read, full of wisdom and knowledge unique to that family’s journey.

This blog post shows the extreme care and customization that an OIT board-certified allergist takes. They know how to individualize the treatment safely for the patient. Dr Baker discusses with parents how fast or slowly they want to go, as you can see here. If this mom had wanted to just increase a little, it would have been fine.

Her comments about FDA and OIT are spot-on. OIT is a medical protocol customized to the child. Having ONE protocol and written instructions for EVERY allergic person, with no deviation, is not a substitute for a skilled allergist determining dosing.

ONE EXCERPT FROM THE BLOG:

Week 4 (June 28). Yesterday Ethan went back to Dr. Baker’s for his next round of desensitization. He started off with .025 mg for his first dose and had no symptoms. His next dose was .05 grams – still with no symptoms. Then because he had tolerated those doses so well and was doing great he went up to .1 grams. He seemed fine un…til about 30 min after that dose and then complained of some mild stomach discomfort. At about 40 min after the last dose he starting vomiting and sneezing.

Dr. Baker has decided this is a child who should go up no more than 1 to 2 doses at a time since both times we have tried 3 increases in dosage he has had a reaction. He went home this week on a REAL piece of peanut (tiny .05 grams) and has had no symptoms while at home.

This is an amazing program that is changing children’s/parents lives. I recently received a very strongly worded email about this not being an FDA approved treatment and as a parent all I have to say to that is that there are many things the FDA has approved that have been taken off the market. The clinical trials have shown great success and there are a handful of Dr’s throughout the states offering this program who are doing so very successfully. We feel so priviledged to be part of this! This photo is showing him having his pulmonary function tested which they do very regularly.
